Guaiacum officinale or 'Wayaca'
The Wayaca is a native evergreen tree. Thanks to its deep taproot the tree is very drought tolerant and is able to get to water.
The trunk peels, revealing various color. The flowers are light lilac in color. The fruits turn yellow when ripe and the seeds are dark red. The disadvantage of the fallen fruit particles is that they stick to footwear.
The tree grows slowly, which is a pitty because it is a beautiful shade tree when mature. It is very drought tolerant but when irrigated it grows faster than in nature.
