Guaiacum sanctum or Wayaca shimaron
Guaiacum sanctum or Wayaca shimaron is a native tree, which only grows on limestone terraces, such as at Coral Estate, Coral Cliff etc.
The sanctum is a smaller tree than the officinale and also has a more open structure. The trunk is light gray and rough compaired to the one of officinale which is smooth with green spots.
The Wayaca shimaron only grows in Central America, in the Florida Keys, the Bahamas and a few other Carebbean islands.
The tree is excellent for planting in the garden, especially in gardens on limestone terraces.
Once in bloom this probably the most beautiful tree. The flowers are deep purple or dark blue with bright yellow stamens.
